The International Day of Yoga was celebrated at ICAR-Indian Institute of Water Management, Bhubaneswar on 21st June 2016. As per the action plan prepared yoga practice was conducted for two days by Shri Pitambar Sahoo, Youth Coordinator, Patanjali Yog Samiti, Bhubaneswar on 17th and 18th June 2016 from 5 to 6 pm. On 21st June 2016 mass yoga was performed from 6 am to 7.30 am as per the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) as issued by Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. At the beginning, Shri Dhruvajyoti Chowdhury, Youth Coordinator and yoga expert, Patanjali Yog Samiti, Khurda, Bhubaneswar briefed about yoga and its origin. Then started mass yoga with a 2 minute prayer and 10 minutes of Sadilaja / Chaalan Kriyas/ Loosening Practices yogasanas viz., Taadaasan (ii) Vrikshaasan (iii) Pada-hastaasana / Uttaanaasana (iv) Ardha Chakraasana (v) Trikonaasana, (vi) Bhadraasana/Baddha konaasan (vii) Vajrasana/Veerasana (viii) Ushtraasana ( Ardha for bigginners) (ix) Shashakaasan (x) Utthana Mandukasana (xi) Marichyaasana/Vakraasana (xii) Makaraasana (xiii) Bhujangaasana (xiv) Shalabhaasana (xv) Setubandhasana (xvi) Utthanapaadaasana (xvii) Ardha Halasana (xviii) Pavana Muktaasana (xix) Shavaasana were performed for 20 minutes. The benefits, salient points, caution/precautions etc. was discussed for each practice.
After completion of the aasanas, 3 cycles of Kapaalabhaati of 40 strokes each was practised for 3 minutes followed by Nadi Shodhana / AnulomaViloma Pranayama (5 rounds ), Sheetali Pranayama (5 rounds ) and Bhraamari Pranayama (Bhramari Rechaka) (5 rounds) were also practised for 6 minutes. Dhyana/ Meditation was performed for 8 minutes with eyes closed and and hands in Jnana / Gyana Mudra. At last the yoga practice session ended with a Sankalpa followed by Shantih patha.
In the afternoon from 3 to 5 pm a formal workshop on Yoga was conducted. Dr. S. K. Ambast, Director, ICAR-IIWM, Bhubaneswar welcomed the guests and briefed about the activities performed to celebrate International Yoga Day. Dr. H. P. Singh, former DDG( Horticulture), ICAR, New Delhi and former VC, RAU, Pusa was the Chief Guest of the programme and he delivered a thought provoking lecture on diets and yoga. He acknowledged the contribution of yoga gurus in popularizing yoga to the common mass. Shri Sudhanshu Sekhar Adhikary and Shri Pitambar Sahoo, Yoga Experts from Patanjali Yog Samiti, Bhubaneswar and Guest of Honours delivered lectures on usefulness of yoga in our day to day life. Shri Sahoo demonstrated aasanas helpful to control diabetes, hypertension, gastric, joint problems and sense organs. Few Bhajanas were performed by the staff members. The programme ended with Laughter therapy as a relief from stress. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Mausumi Raychaudhuri, Principal Scientist and Nodal Officer, International Day of Yoga.
