On June 24, 2026, MGMG Team 2 from ICAR-IIWM, Bhubaneswar held a farmers’ awareness program in Gangapada village of Jatni block. The event aligned with the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, aimed to prepare the local farming community for a difficult agricultural season, as meteorological forecasts predict below-normal rainfall due to El Niño. 21 progressive farmers from the village took part in the interactive session, where experts from the MGMG team stressed the urgent need to adopt climate-resilient practices. Rainwater conservation methods were a central topic, taught to help farmers protect their crops during expected dry spells and make the most of limited water supplies. To promote long-term soil health and reduce reliance on costly chemical inputs, the program recommended balanced fertilizer use combined with organic alternatives. The team particularly encouraged using green manure, highlighting Dhaicha, a fast-growing legume that fixes nitrogen and greatly improves soil structure before the main crop is planted. They also explained the advantages of vermi compost as an affordable, nutrient-rich amendment that enhances soil moisture retention, a vital attribute in low-rainfall years. The attending farmers showed strong interest in adopting these sustainable practices to secure their livelihoods and conserve their land for future seasons.
